Day 56 Mattawa > Deep River

Wednesday tried to sneak out but no! The Commander was breathing down my neck to get me up and away. My first challenge of the day can only be described as sunshine mountain! I could see a glimmer of the rising sun as I pumped my way to the top singing the said song under my breath! This country has quite dramatic changes and today I followed the Ottawa river. I’m in Ontario and on the North East shore lies Quebec. The hills are the biggest since the Rockies and are quite like the Appalachian Mountains I experienced during my time in North Carolina. Very green with mountain wild flowers. Small lakes surrounded by groves of spruce trees and a mix of birch. Once or twice I heard deer crashing through the undergrowth at least I’m almost sure that was what it was. The road was extremely remote – after a short while the Newarkers dropped by with a yogurt and said they’d set me a picnic up down the road. I continued on growing more excited by more promised feast! Feeling hungrier hungrier eventually I reached a small cafe at 80 km. I checked my phone thinking this was a bad joke! There was a message telling me that 40 km back up the road they were ready and waiting! They had been busy setting up in an idyllic spot and by the time they were ready I had shot by them without either of us noticing! Reunited in Deep River we enjoyed our feast washed down with a little wine as we basked in the evening sun.
