Edge to Edge across Canada

This site is dedicated to documenting the travels of Jo. I have decided to spend the summer of 2012 travelling across Canada on a bike to raise money for Cancer Research UK. The actual start date is April 12th at White Rock in British Columbia. I plan to finish 31st July at Halifax, Nova Scotia approx. 8046 Km by the time I have detoured to have a beer with my friends and family on route!

Who am I - yes well I’d like to say blonde, blue eyed and gorgeously fit. Sorry no. I’m actually fat and forty nine and three quarters - but getting fitter. No I’m not going through a Mid-Life Crisis - I’m going through a Not Mid- Life Indulgence. I say indulgence because when I asked my husband if he thought I could possibly bike the coast to coast(uk) or maybe the Danube he laughed and said well you’ve always wanted to live in Canada why don’t you bike their coast to coast! There you go the seed was planted.

This all started last April when after feeling unwell I was examined by my doctor and to my horror a large lump was detected in my breast. I was one of those ones fortunate enough to have the good news that I did not have breast cancer. The initial shock hit me like a sledge hammer. Sadly soon after my two close friends found that they had different types cancer within weeks of each other. They have individual ways in which they deal with their illnesses. All I can offer is Love and by doing this challenge help Cancer Research UK find ways to rid our world of this terrible disease.

So after much planning and some training. Yes training! Friends have recognised that large bottomed cyclist wearing lycra ( yes I am hoping to spend the next few years re- designing cycling shorts and helmets actually attractive enough to wear) heading over the Wolds this winter through - rain and snow grabbing a days training in-between my work schedule. Here I am nearly ready to go.

So keep tuned as we get this site up and riding - and post it from the occasional internet cafés. My kids Charlotte and James - My Godsons -Harry, Andy, Jonathon and William will all help to keep you in touch in-between those cafes. I will introduce them as we go along.

See you soon.

Hey the skies are blue so today I bit the bullet. Yes it's all up
hill now! Quite literally straight up the Sea to Sky highway. My first mountain!Slight change on the start and a considerably longer route. Heavy snows on the original mountain passes have made that one impossible for the next few weeks. My first outside toilet. Not sure why they built a shed over a bucket! (photo's to follow!) thinking about a trans Canada toilet in the bush guide! Probably call it - Over the Edge.
Cheers for your comments. D - what happens when you run out of gears? Remember you inspired me! Will be thinking about you - have a great trip. I'll send you some wind!

Day 5
Early start
Started the day with a good ride down to Pemberton 34 km
With only two hills. Great views of the mountains and tremendous Nern Falls. Felt good so carried on without taking a break. By the time I had cycled another 17km
I was expecting Rob to overtake with more water. Sadley he was sure he'd missed me so doubled back to check the ditches! I had to start the 4,000 mt climb to Joffre lake with few supplies. This is prime bear country so I was propelled along more with nervous energy than actual fitness. Eventually Rob arrived suprised by the distance. Great to see him but more interested in the supplies he carried. Finished the day 400mt from
the summit.
Tomorrow should be easier! Will be thinking of Jackie Happy Bithday matie x
Cheers to Charlie & Kate - hope your shoulder is feeling better!
David & Lesley great to hear the coffee's on! Love & hugs.
Gorgeous Glennnnn the only thing I have in reserve is a Dalwinnie at the end of the day!

Lots of wildlife on the roads Deer, mountain goats and Horses all very bemused staying on the road whilst Lycra Woman passed by!
Michele cann't wait to see you & a cold beer. Don't forget some spokes for your bike just impossible to buy! Wow that sounds serious. P.s the train schedule could come in handy oops hope nobody reads this!!!

Hey Jo, update on football scores. Saturday 28th April, Forest 2 Portsmouth 0. See, your endeavors are bringing them luck! You've probably heard that the Champions League Final is between Chelsea and Bayern Munich. Might get George to come over for the final, if only to save the state of the house! The very best of luck on your next stage, and I'll be praying for sunshine and a strong breeze to whisk you on your way. Off to town now to play at Diggers. I'm playing Iron Maiden and Guns 'n' Roses tonight. Being 50 is fantastic - goodness knows what you'll turn your hand to, but I can't wait to be there to see it! Thinking of you always, love from us all. Sx

Hi vvbf, yes still here in Bahrain, only now I'm teaching at the Police Academy. I feel a film coming on! hahaha Jo will need a visit out here even if just to have a daily session in the salon with manicures, pedicures, massage and reflexology, and we'd love to have you back. Hmmm... just remembered your waxing story in Turkey! Eurgh Every time we pass the stall in Seef selling 3D images etched into crystal I think of Jo's vv special gift to you. Actually, it still scares me. Hey Jo, perhaps we can organise key ring versions to commemorate your remarkable journey, to hand out at your birthday! Great to hear you in such good spirits Jo. What an adventure! Sx

Hi Everyone

Im flying out to Canada next Monday with Little (BIG!) Brother, we will be the next support crew. Driving from Toronto to meet them in Duluth (American town on edge of lake superior in Minnesota), we will be following Mum and Michelle back through Minnesota into Canada to Sault Ste Marie.

Slightly concerned after watching "Planet Earth Live" last night on BBC1 - Julia Bradbury clambering about watching the HUGE black bear population in Minnesota! ALOT of BEARS - on a positive note this should speed up there journey time!

If anyone would like us to take anything out with us please let us know thinking (messages of support, chocolate buttons, whisky, pro plus, knickers!)
